The diamond flywheel requires little or no maintenance when used properly. There are a few considerations that should be identified to maximize the serviceability of the tool’s life. First, the diamond flywheel is intended to run at high speeds, in excess of 30,000 RPM. The 30,000 RPM is considered the minimum speed at which one of these wheels should be operated. The most common arrangement for a flexshaft and handpiece combination is the “R” series motor and #35 handpiece with the planetary drive system. Lubricating the diamond flywheel prior to and during cutting is not recommended. When using the diamond flywheel, it is necessary to allow it to come up to full speed before engaging with the surface to be cut. When cutting, very light pressure is all that is required. The wheel only needs to contact the surface to cut. If excessive force is applied while cutting, there is a risk of knocking the diamond loose from the flywheel. If this happens, the flywheel is ruined and no attempt should be made to glue the diamond back into the flywheel. Excessive pressure will also reduce the speed of the flywheel during operation, thereby reducing its efficiency as well as making it more susceptible to damage.
